Mercury was the name of a texture map plug-in I wrote for 3dsmax some time ago. I liked the results I got out of it, so turned the algorithm into a screensaver. Some examples are below, click for a larger image. The screensaver also has a configurable gradient control built in so you can choose the colours that get swirled onto the screen.
